Therapeutic Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage techniques focus on the deep layers of tissues that are under the surface. The therapist uses sustained pressure applied with thumbs, fingers, fists, palms and elbows. During the treatment, the therapist will combine Swedish massage and other techniques such as Graston Techniques, Myofascial Release or Cupping which may be more specific and cause tenderness which is to be expected. The amount of pressure used is specifically adapted to the patient's needs and tolerance level.

Deep tissue massage assists the body to release restricted or injured tissues relieving acute or chronic aches and pains that can develop over time such as trigger points (commonly referred to as “knots”) in the muscles and fascia, scar tissue, joint restrictions, or adhesions resulting in pain relief. These “knots” that we feel in our muscles are bands of rigid and painful muscle tissue. They can inhibit our circulation and cause pain and inflammation.

A person who works at a computer or desk job for prolonged periods with a less-than-optimal workstation will experience postural dysfunctions placing stress on the body usually in the back, neck and shoulders.

When experiencing these stressors the body has an amazing ability to become more resilient and will compensate by producing more durable tissue where it is needed. When the stresses continue the tissues then become more rigid, contracted, and less flexible resulting in a cluster of tissues sticking together (trigger points) and inevitably laying down scar tissue (a non-flexible tissue). As a result, the area becomes tight and very painful.
